What’s the hottest-selling software brand in U.S. retail stores? Microsoft? Adobe? Electronic Arts? This past June, that honor belonged to Kaspersky Lab, according to one independent market-watching group. The same group reports that Kaspersky’s overall sales more than tripled for the first half of 2010 versus the first half of 2009. Solid security software like Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 ($79.95 for 3 licenses direct) should mean a good second half, too.

Webroot Antivirus, I was all prepared to evaluate new antivirus software from ebroot last fall, but the product’s release got pushed back—repeatedly. It turns out that the company’s new CEO had exhorted the design team to hold off on any new versions until they could come up with something truly stunning. After putting Webroot AntiVirus Sotfware with Spy Sweeper 2011 through its paces I’m convinced he was right—this application was worth the wait.

Security software written by security geeks for security geeks can be scary for the average user, and F-Secure’s suites have long had a geeky air. That all changes with F-Secure Internet Security 2010 ($59.99 direct for 3 licenses) and its all-new task-focused user interface. The changes aren’t merely skin deep, either. The new Real-Time Protection Network feature improves detection and remediation of problems in many different areas. But it’s not enough to make this suite an outstanding overall choice.
